How to Turn a Photo Into a Video With AI: One Photo, No Prompt

Here is how to turn a photo into a video with AI: open the Ginly AI app, pick an effect, add one photo and tap Generate. There is no prompt to write, because every effect already contains its own instructions, and the result is a short AI video you can save or share. Ginly AI is free to download for iPhone, iPad and Android, and new users may get free starter credits to try it.

How to turn a photo into a video in 3 steps

  1. Pick an effect. Open the Effects tab, browse a category or search all effects, and tap one to watch its preview.
  2. Add one photo. Take a picture or choose one from your gallery, then crop it. A few duo effects also accept two separate photos.
  3. Tap Generate. Ginly AI creates a short video from your photo and adds it to your Library, where you can save it to your phone or share it.

Ginly AI turns a photo into a short AI video using ready-made effect templates. Each template carries fixed instructions that set the motion, the scene and the style, while your photo supplies the subject. That makes it a simple way to turn a photo into a video using AI: you choose an effect by watching its preview instead of describing the result in words. Ginly AI has no AI model of its own: the video is generated in the cloud by third-party AI services, and because the motion is imagined by AI, every result depends on your photo.

What you need before you start

  • An iPhone, iPad or Android phone. Ginly AI runs on iOS 13 or later (per the App Store listing) and on Android 7.0 or later.
  • The Ginly AI app. It is free to download from the App Store or Google Play. Videos are made only in the mobile app: this website doesn't create videos, and there is no browser or computer version.
  • A clear photo you have the right to use. If someone else is in it, ask them first.
  • An internet connection, because the AI services that create the video run in the cloud.
  • Credits. Creating a video uses credits. New users may get free starter credits, and a daily credit gift may be available; offers can change.
  • An account is optional. Guest mode works with no sign-up needed.

Step by step: make an AI video from a photo on iPhone, iPad or Android

1. Open the app and sign in or continue as a guest

The first time you open Ginly AI, tick the box to accept the Terms and Privacy Policy, then continue with Google, Apple (iPhone and iPad only) or email, or tap Continue as Guest. A guest account needs no sign-up, but logging out of it loses that guest account's data, so download any video you want to keep. If you don't have a subscription, the app shows a subscription offer when it opens; you can close it and carry on.

2. Find an effect

The home screen has two tabs: Effects and Library. Effects sorts more than 100 templates into categories such as Transformation Effects, Hug Effects, Dance & Performance and Christmas Magic, and the All effects screen lets you search and filter the whole collection. Tap a template to open it: you'll see its preview video, its title, a photo slot and the Generate button. The preview shows what the effect does, and your video follows the same idea with your photo.

3. Add your photo

Tap the photo slot and choose the camera or your gallery, then crop the photo freely or with a preset. If a selfie looks mirrored, use the flip option to fix it. On a duo effect you can also choose between Single Photo and 2 separate photos (more on this below). Your photo uploads in the background while you finish.

4. Tap Generate

Credits are deducted when you tap Generate, and the app takes you to your Library, where the new video is marked as being created. If you allow notifications, Ginly AI sends one when the video is ready. Meanwhile, the app shows a strip of effects so you can pick your next one.

5. Save or share your video

Open the finished video to play it. Download saves it to your phone's gallery as an MP4, and Share opens your phone's share sheet so you can post it on social apps or send it to friends. The same screen lets you report or delete a video. If a video fails, the Library shows a credit refund button (limits apply).

How to make an AI video of yourself

To make an AI video of yourself, use a photo with just you in it, facing the camera, and match the framing to the effect. A head-and-shoulders or waist-up photo is enough for effects that stay close to you; effects that show you head to toe work best from a full-length photo, otherwise the AI has to invent the rest of you. These effects are made for a photo of you:

  • AI flying video: you lift off and fly superhero-style over a city skyline with a small red cape. A head-and-shoulders or waist-up photo is enough.
  • AI stadium video: you're caught on camera in a stadium or festival crowd, TV fan-cam style. A waist-up photo fits well.
  • AI aging video: an AI-imagined older version of you walks in and poses with you; your own face isn't aged in place.
  • AI dance video: you perform a short dance routine. Use a full-length photo with your feet in the frame.
  • 3D figurine AI: you're scanned and turned into a collectible desk figurine next to a box printed with your photo (it's a video, not a physical toy). Use a photo that shows most of your body.
  • Mini Me AI: giant fingers lift a tiny, laughing version of you above an empty arena stage. A full-length photo works best, because your legs swing through the clip.

Which effect for which photo

Not every photo is a selfie. Let the photo you have choose the effect: the table below matches common photo types to effects, based on what each effect's preview shows.

Photo types and the Ginly AI effects to try
Your photoEffect to tryWhat the preview shows
A photo of you with room beside youAI younger self or AI aging videoA younger or an older version of you steps in and shares the frame with you
Two people, in one photo or twoAI hug videoThe two people turn to each other and hug
A waist-up photo of youAI muscle filter or AI flying videoA sudden bodybuilder-style muscle reveal, or a superhero-style flight over a city
An old family photoAnimate old photosThe people in it smile and wave; one version also adds colour to a sepia photo
A fashion sketchAI fashion videoA sketched gown comes alive on a model walking the catwalk
A photo of a carAI meme videoA parked car grows robotic legs and walks off down the street
A photo of your cat or dogAI pet ChristmasA kitten and a puppy get dressed up as little Christmas trees

Results depend on your photo, and the AI won't copy every detail. The old-photo effects animate the picture, but they don't repair cracks or give you a restored still image. Each effect in this guide has its own page with its preview and photo tips. Browse more by category, such as AI love videos, AI trend videos, AI transformation videos and the Halloween AI trend, or see every effect page in the AI video effects hub.

One photo or two photos?

Every Ginly AI effect works with a single photo. A handful of duo effects, such as the AI hug video, also let you switch from Single Photo (the default) to 2 separate photos. Choose two photos when the two people aren't in the same picture: the app scales both to the same height, places them side by side and crops them into one wide image, and that single image is what the AI works from. You can't add more than two photos, and group videos aren't supported. Our guide on how to make an AI video from two photos walks through it.

Photo tips for a better result

  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo. Dark or blurry photos give the AI less to work with.
  • Keep the face visible, with no sunglasses, masks or hands in front of it.
  • Crop so the subject fills most of the frame, without cutting off what the effect needs, such as your whole body for a full-body effect.
  • For an effect made for one person, use a photo of just that person; for two people, choose a duo effect.
  • Match the preview: an effect whose preview starts from a car, a pet or a sketch is built around that kind of photo.

Two ways to make a picture move: prompt tools vs ready-made effects

Search for ways to animate a picture and you'll find two kinds of tools. Prompt-based generators ask you to describe the motion in words, and you rework the prompt until the clip looks right; that is why so many trend tutorials hand out long copy-paste prompts. Some tutorials even combine two tools, one to make a still image from a prompt and another to animate it.

A template app such as Ginly AI works the other way round. The instructions are already built into each effect, so you choose an effect by watching its preview, add a photo and tap Generate. The trade-off: you can't describe a scene of your own or change an effect. If you want a scene that no template covers, a prompt tool fits better. If you want a known trend from one photo without writing anything, a ready-made effect is the simpler route.

Limits to know before you start

  • Short clips. Each video is a few seconds long; Ginly AI doesn't make long videos.
  • Photos in, video out. You can't use a video as the input, and no effect takes more than two photos.
  • No speech. Ginly AI doesn't make a photo talk or sing.
  • Some photos are rejected. The AI providers' automated content filters may reject some photos, for example nudity.
  • The shape depends on the effect. Videos can come out portrait, square or landscape, depending on the effect and often on your photo.
  • Not a photo editor. Ginly AI doesn't retouch photos, add photo filters, trim videos or add captions, and you can't edit or combine effects.
  • Personal use. The Terms grant a personal, non-commercial licence.

Use photos responsibly

Use photos you have the right to use, and get permission before you use someone else's photo. Never use Ginly AI to deceive, harass, embarrass or impersonate anyone. Videos are AI-generated: label them as AI when you post them and never present them as real events. Ginly AI is for users 18 and over. Only a parent or legal guardian should use a child's photo, and never with romance, horror or fight effects or in a hug with a stranger.

To create your video, the photo you choose is processed by third-party AI services (Fal.ai and PixVerse, as listed in our Privacy Policy). You can delete your account in the app or ask us by email.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI make a video from a photo?

Yes. AI video tools can animate a single still photo into a short clip. In Ginly AI you pick a ready-made effect, add one photo and tap Generate, and third-party AI services create a short video, a few seconds long, in which the subject of your photo moves, changes or appears in a new scene. The motion is imagined by AI, so results vary from photo to photo.

What app turns photos into videos?

Ginly AI is an app that turns a photo into a short AI video using 100+ ready-made effect templates, with no prompt to write. It is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store and for Android on Google Play, and it is free to download. To compare it with other apps, see our list of the best photo to video AI apps.

How to turn a photo into a video on iPhone?

Install Ginly AI from the App Store (iOS 13 or later, per the App Store listing; it also runs on iPad). Open an effect, tap the photo slot, take a photo or choose one from your Photos, crop it and tap Generate. The video appears in the app's Library, where Download saves it to your Photos as an MP4. The steps are the same on Android.

How to make a picture move with AI?

Pick an effect whose preview shows the movement you want, such as a dance, a hug or animating an old photo, add your picture and tap Generate. Ginly AI sends the picture, together with the effect's fixed instructions, to third-party AI services, which create a short clip of it moving. There's no prompt to write and nothing to animate by hand.

How do I make an AI video of myself?

Use a clear, front-facing photo with only you in it, then pick an effect made for a photo of you, such as the AI flying video, AI dance video or Mini Me AI, and tap Generate. A head-and-shoulders or waist-up photo is enough for the flying video, while the dance and Mini Me effects work best from a full-length photo. Only use photos of yourself or of people who agreed.

How to turn a photo into a video for free?

Ginly AI is free to download, and new users may get free starter credits to try an effect; a daily credit gift may also be available. Offers can change. Every video uses credits: once the free ones are used, credits come with weekly subscription plans, and subscribers can top up with credit packs.
